Artist's Description

Howard Pyle was an American illustrator whose innovation created an American school of art and influenced many younger artists. He is well known for his illustrations of pirates, and is credited with creating what has become the modern stereotype of pirate dress. This image is called “Marooned” and depicts a pirate cast upon a desolate shore to survive alone as best he can. It was a common punishment for those who broke the pirate code.
